You never do. [the cab pulls up and she gets in, taking off her shoes and pulling him in after her as she gives the driver their address] No more walking, Hawkeye. [she lays her head in his lap. after a moment:]
That’s why you’ll be a good dad. Because you always try to be better.
[he slides in after her]
[sighs] I hope you’re right. That’s all I can ask. Is that I won’t fail him.
You never watched Holes?
Is that a porno?
Probably. Holes. Woodpeckers.
Hey. [they’re stopped on a corner as bobbi waves stupidly for a cab] Hey. You are. Every day.
[kisses her forehead] I’m glad. I never want to disappoint you.
Maybe a massage too.
[nods] Yeah…
You’re so good to me. [she looks up at him] I’m glad we went, too.
I try to be.
Thought I’d ask anyway. [kisses her cheek]
I’ll let you carry me when we get home. My feet hurt in these stupid shoes. [she leans against him] Are you glad we went?
Maybe a massage too.
[nods] Yeah…
[he squeezes her hand] Do I get a bridal carry?
I threw up in Betty’s sink, I’m not carrying anyone. [she squeezes back and bumps him with her hip] I’ll make it up to you though.
Thought I’d ask anyway. [kisses her cheek]
Mmhm. Maybe. [she kisses him and stands, taking his hand in hers] Come on, Hawkeye. Let’s get you home.
[he squeezes her hand] Do I get a bridal carry?
You’ve got some screws loose in that jaw, bud.
If only.
The woodpecker sighs.
